Nokia starts shipping 700 and 701 with Symbian Belle

updated 05:30 pm EDT, Fri September 16, 2011

Unclear where phones will be available

Nokia posted on Twitter that it's now shipping its 700 and 701 smartphones loaded with the Symbian Belle OS. First announced in August, the devices didn't get immediate regional availability or pricing. They will most likely focus on Europe and Asia with limited sales in North America.

Symbian Belle offers several improvements over its predecessor Anna. It provides re-arrangeable differently-sized widgets such as the clock, email, music player, favorite contacts and the calendar. The taskbar has been improved. The lock screen displays missed calls and new messages. Near-field Communications (NFC) are now deeply integrated into the OS for tags and payments. Visual multitasking has been added to make switching between apps easier.

The 700 is Nokia's smallest ever slate-shaped smartphone. It uses an AMOLED screen and touts a high amount of green materials. The 701 features a 3.5-inch, 360x640 IPS-based LCD.
