Apple leaks: iPhone 5 'weeks away,' looks like Case-Mate

iPhone 5 impending launch, design corroborated

Case-Mate's iPhone 5 case posting was corroborated by sources from within Apple on Thursday. Stating that the launch was just "weeks away," staffers gave descriptions of the new iPhone's look that reportedly lined up with the larger, tapered, aluminum look. An engineer told the NYT that the design would be "fairly different" than the iPhone 4, inside and out.

The internal details given out were largely those presumed to be comping, such as the dual-core A5 chip and the eight-megapixel camera. Either this generation or next would have an NFC-capable Qualcomm chip that would be used to handle payments processed through iTunes, among other possible third-party services.

Although not directly confirmed as of yet, the claims would put the lay to beliefs that the iPhone 5 would just be a slight revision of the iPhone 4. Apple is rumored to be pushing for a bigger screen that would require substantial design changes. iOS as a phone platform is being pressured by Android phones like the Galaxy S II that are popularizing four-inch or bigger displays, which can be useful not just for photos and video but for more comfortable touchscreen input and reading text without having to zoom in.

Case-Mate itself has replaced its one-time iPhone 5 case page with a teaser citing "inside resources" that point to both an iPhone 5 and an "iPhone 4S," most likely the 8GB iPhone 4 with a dual-mode chipset that serves both GSM and CDMA networks.
