Qualcomm confirms 2.5GHz Snapdragons coming in early 2012

Chips 2x faster than those used in today's phones

Qualcomm has confirmed that it is on target to deliver its next generation S4 series Snapdragon processors to its partners by the end of this year. The news was delivered by Qualcomm's Senior Vice President of Product Management, Cristiano Amon, at the company's Innovation Qualcomm event, currently being held in Istanbul. The chips, running at speeds up to 2.5GHz, could show up in smartphones early next year, possibly in time for the world's largest phone trade show, Mobile World Congress, in February.

The next-generation chipsets in the S4 family will offer as much as quad-core Adreno graphics, 1080p HD, as well as 3G and 4G. The top speed of 2.5GHz is almost twice as fast as the processors currently being used in current smartphones. Qualcomm's Snapdragon can be found in many of today's phones and tablets, including those made by HTC, RIM, LG, Samsung, and Motorola.

Much of the roadmap had been leaked earlier and had suggested 2.5GHz chips wouldn't come as quickly. Qualcomm may still ship lower-clocked processors at first and wait until later to hit its intended peak performance. [via Pocket-lint]
