iPhone 5 coming to France on Oct. 15th, says Orange CEO

updated 02:45 pm EDT, Wed September 14, 2011

Timing likely imprecise

The iPhone 5 will launch on October 15th, claims Stéphane Richard, the CEO of French carrier Orange. The executive reportedly made the comment during an interview on a TV business program. Hardmac notes that Richard has let slip similarly secret Apple information in the past, namely about the first-generation iPad; he wrongly stated, though, that the tablet would have a camera. Investigation of the hardware would eventually show space for a camera, suggesting that Apple removed it late into development.

The iPhone 5 remark is roughly in line with when Apple is rumored to be launching the device, but may again be slightly off. The 15th is a Saturday, not a common day of the week for Apple product rollouts. Most reports have also called for the phone to arrive on the 7th, or at the latest on the 14th. It could conceivably debut in France slightly later, but since the iPhone 3G Apple has included France on the list of launch-day countries.

Apple should delay shipping the units to France by a week.

Although I crave for pre-release information, the reason why Apple is so successful is keeping secrets until the release. A blatant release of information by a partner should be rewarded with delayed releases or a holdback of some of the inventory. Everyone else is keeping silent
