Netgear: Google TV as a platform not there yet

updated 02:25 pm EDT, Wed September 14, 2011

Netgear awaiting Ice Cream Sandwich for Google TV

In talking to SlashGear, Netgear revealed it is evaluating Google TV for its media streaming hardware. At the launch of the NeoTV streamer, the company's reps also admitted that Google TV isn't "there yet" as a platform. While NeoTV will cost about $80, a streaming box with Google TV would be closer to $200, Netgear believes.

Netgear appears to be awaiting the Honeycomb (Android 3.1) release of Android, upon which the next Google TV platform will be based. This version of the OS is expected to be much more appealing to consumers, as it should allow developers to create apps for Android phones, tablets and set top boxes at the same time, giving Google TV users access to the Android Market and many more features.

The Google TV update is due in the fall, but still too soon for Netgear to have used with the NeoTV.
