DisplayLink shows 1st USB 3.0 graphics adapter from Winstar

updated 06:05 pm EDT, Wed September 14, 2011

Connects display at resolutions up to 2560x1600

DisplayLink, a chip maker which specializes in providing links between monitors and computers, demonstrated the first implementation of a USB 3.0 to HDMI graphics adapter. At the Intel Developer Forum (IDF), currently taking place, the company showed the simply titled USB 3.0 to HDMI adapter made by its partner Winstars. The adapter uses DisplayLink's DL-3500 chip.

With this adapter, an HD display can connect to a computer through a USB 3.0 port at resolutions up to 2560x1600 in either mirrored or extended modes. The company claims this offers full-screen 3D gaming and video playback with low lag and smooth window and cursor movement, unlike many attempts at USB 2.0 options. It also enables 2.1- or 5.1-channel audio and auto-sensing hot plug support.

Pricing and availability for the adapter haven't been given out
