LG Display solves iPad 2 display issues, hits 4m a month

LG Display fixes iPad 2 backlight bleeds

LG Display has reportedly solved the chronic iPad 2 backlight bleeding that was affecting its ability to produce LCDs for Apple. It successfully ramped production back up to four million displays a month in August from 2.6 million at most in July. The new production level should keep up through at least September, Digitimes insiders claimed.

Others had to chip in during the period, when LG lost orders. Samsung had to produce two million where Chimei Innolux produced as many as 500,000. Both have been previously identified as long-term iPad display partners brought on as Apple pushed the limits of its supply.

The rejuvenated production levels are expected to help Apple comfortably reach a new high for iPad volumes, which are estimated to sit at between 12 million to 15 million for the summer. While lower than one quoted 20 million figure, it would keep Apple comfortably ahead of rivals that are so far struggling to sell more than a few hundred thousand tablets each quarter.

LG may be increasingly dependent on the mobile industry for its display sales. It has cut back on TV spending and is believed to be rolling more of its screen production into smartphones and tablets.
