Microsoft manager who denied Zune's end quits for startup

Zune manager McLauchlan exits for Buddy

Microsoft's Zune media players faced an extra setback Tuesday after Zune HD business development manager Dave McLauchlan said he was exiting the company. The company veteran resigned last week and will finish Friday. His ultimate destination is Buddy, an early startup that will help make mobile apps "cheaper, faster & easier."

McLauchlan characterized the departure as friendly.

The shift comes after a string of senior-level exits from Microsoft. For McLauchlan, it also carries a degree of irony as he had promised half a year ago that the Zune HD will live on. While the project isn't known to be ending, his withdrawal will still cause some disarray at a time when many are questioning the survivability of an MP3 player that hasn't been given a hardware revision since 2010.

His quitting also follows a month after Microsoft dropped Zune originals. Zune HD players are still in stores but can't be customized like they could for all their previous history. Theories about the ramping down have varied but have suggested that Microsoft both wants to switch attention to Windows Phone and considers the MP3 player category 'lost' to Apple's iPod.

    Does anyone even use

Zunes anymore? Does Microsoft even advertise them? It would make more sense if the Zunes ran some form of WP7. That might help sales if they keep the software up-to-date.

I had an iPhone 4, but sold it to buy an iPhone 5. As a unit, the iPhone is fantastic. Having said that, some individual things are simply better than the Apple component. My Sony Cyber-shot C905 phone has an 8.1MP camera with TONS of features...and it came out 3 years ago. I don't think the iPhone 5 camera will be any better. :(

What does this have to do with Zune? Well, I also own a Zune HD (and a very nice - translates into expensive) Sony Walkman mp3 player I imported from Japan) and as a media player, it outperforms what my iPhone's iPod and our iPod Touch. The sound quality is better. It is more pocketable. It is built like a tank, yet lightweight. So, IMHO, the Zune is a better music player than the iOS devices, but not a better overall device.

I really do wish Apple would improve the iPod sound quality and camera so that it could TRULY outperform all competitors.

    Wow more idiots

I made a positive comment about owning an iPhone 4 and then selling it to buy an iPhone 5. BUT because I state that the Zune has better sound quality and my 3-year old Sony C905 has a better camera than my iPhone 4....all 100% true statement....I get voted down.

What the f*** is wrong with you Apple fanboy idiots? If someone doesn't post a 100% glowing comment about Apple at all time you vote it down. f****** idiots.

    Not idiots

Perhaps people voted you down because you said you "had an iPhone 4 but sold it to buy an iPhone 5." There are no iPhone 5s yet. Sort of makes the rest of your statements iffy.

last time i checked "sound quality" was very subjective, so no- it's not 100% true. Do what ever floats your boat, and tell me how you like your iPhone 5.

The Gates and Ballmer kids must have fun showing off their Zunes to all their jealous friends.
