Apple quietly shipping Thunderbolt Displays to stores

updated 06:35 pm EDT, Tue September 6, 2011

Thunderbolt Display should be at retail this week

Details have surfaced Tuesday that Apple should be delivering the Thunderbolt Display to stores this week. Both official Apple stores and third-party chains should have the 27-inch screen soon, MacRumors said. Online pre-order customers haven't received shipping notices yet, but Electronista has heard of shipping estimates of September 15.

The display was unveiled at the same time as the new MacBook Air and is being used as a full desktop docking station for portables. The 10Gbps Thunderbolt link feeds both the 2560x1440 display as well as gigabit Ethernet, 2.1-channel audio, an HD webcam, FireWire 800, and three USB ports. Apple's only separate cable for the computer is a MagSafe connector needed to supply the extra power for notebooks.

Users can daisy chain as many as five other Thunderbolt devices, although only one of those can be an additional Thunderbolt Display.

Orders are still available at the online Apple Store.
