Hitachi GST launches new drives packing 1TB per platter

Hitachi GST intros its first 1TB per platter HDDs

Hitachi GST has launched a pair of new hard drive lines that manage to squeeze 1TB per platter. The Deskstar 7K1000.D and CinemaStar series drives sport single-platters and start at 250GB and max out at the 1TB ceiling at this time. They are available either as a high speed 7,200rpm or a lower speed version using Hitachi's CoolSpin technology for low thermal dynamic profile applications.

The Deskstar 7K1000.D uses a 6Gb/second SATA interface and a builds in a 32MB buffer for faster access. The CinemaStar line is designed for applications in DVRs, HD TVs, and IPTV devices. As slim design is generally a feature of this market segment, as is the use of single platter drivers, making the new Hitachi drives particularly suitable for this purpose.

The Deskstar 7K1000.D is shipping now, while Hitachi says that the CinemaStar drives will ship this fall.
