Toshiba shows ZL2 with face-detection, Wi-Fi

Toshiba UK brought its definitive TV to IFA in the 55-inch ZL2. The set merges glasses-free 3D with a native 4K (3,840x2,160) resolution. The design is the first of its size to skip active shutter glasses and relies instead on face-tracking technology. It converts 2D images to 3D as well.

The TV addresses the problem of multiple viewers by sending different 3D images up to nine different viewing positions. It can also detect the viewers' faces and adjust the lenticular lenslets that create the 3D effect as needed. The TV uses the stereoscopic concept to push out two offset images to each user.

The TV's CEVO engine and Toshiba's Resolution+ image enhancement tech upscale content to the 4K resolution. An Auto Calibration feature is also present, with a USB-connected measuring sensor used to calibrate it. Toshiba Places lets users access on-demand video and other apps like acetrax movies, YouTube, BBC iPlayer and Facebook. A Personal TV feature lets multiple users tailor settings to their own liking.

Wi-Fi and a free remote control app for iOS devices let users control the TV from their smartphone as well. A USB recording feature lets users record programming to a connected hard drive USB.

A Freeview HD tuner is integrated, letting the TV pick up free-to-air channels in the UK. The set is DLNA and Windows 7 compatible. In addition to speakers, a subwoofer is also built-in. Connections include four HDMI inputs and two USB ports.

Shipping dates and prices for the ZL2 haven't been revealed.
