Panasonic shows two 3D cameras at pre-IFA event

At the preliminary IFA days in Berlin, Panasonic is showing off two 3D-capable cameras. The first is an unnamed Lumix 3D prototype and a dual-lens digital camera with the ability to shoot 3D HD video and capture 3D images. It uses two newly-developed 4X zoom lenses with thin, folded optics. The lenses allow wide angle through to telephoto shooting and have optical image stabilization. 3D HD video is captured through a stereoscopic side-by-side method.

The other 3D device is production ready and is the HDC-Z1000 camcorder. It has an integrated twin-lens, dual CMOS sensor array and a combined resolution of 13.1 megapixels. A 3.5-inch glasses-free 3D preview LCD can be switched to 2D mode, and there is also a 0.45-inch live viewfinder. The camera can record AVCHD 3D video in 1080p or 1080i. It sets a record, Panasonic claims, by being able to shoot 3D macros as close as 17.8 inches.

The camcorder is the company's first with an integrated 2D/3D twin-lens system. It uses new F1.5 lenses for excellent low-light shooting.

Built-in microphones allow for recording Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround or two-channel stereo. There are two XLR audio inputs and a 48V phantom power supply for connecting external microphones.

Recording sends footage to SD memory cards housed in a dual slot.

Panasonic promises to release shipping dates and prices for the HDC-Z10000 30 days before it is released.
