Sony DS7500 becomes first wireless, 3D surround headphone

updated 02:20 pm EDT, Tue August 30, 2011

System adds 3D "height" to listening experience

Sony is set to launch a new headphone system designed to be used while watching 3D media. The MDR-DS7500 is the first with Sony's new 3D VPT (Virtualphones Technology) which recreates 3D surround sound, and is optimized for 3D content. The headphones are also ergometrically designed to allow the user to wear both 3D glasses and the headphones simultaneously and comfortably.

To create the sound, Sony has integrated Dolby's ProLogic IIz 7.1 channel decoder with a specially adapted DSP processor. Sony claims this adds "height" to the sound, resulting in a more three-dimensional surround sound field.

The system recognizes Blu-multi-channel audio format and an HDMI audio input. It also offers several listening modes including cinema, game, and voice options. Volume is adjustable through a remote RF controller.

Price for the system is 49,350 Yen ($643 USD). Additional headphones are available for 24,675 Yen($322 USD). Sony will begin demonstrating the headphones in its Japanese showrooms tomorrow. The company has not given any official availability date or said when the headphone set might reach the US. [via Akihabara]
