New Canadian store opening Saturday
Apple ranks 34th in the US in terms of retail revenue, according to a Chain Store Age Magazine survey. During 2010 Apple managed $9.82 billion through its retail stream, allowing it to leapfrog out of 57th place. A separate analysis by RetailSails recently placed Apple first in the US in terms of sales per square foot.
The top 20 companies have remained fairly static, with only a few position swaps, Chain Store remarks. The survey's leader is Walmart, which generated $418 billion in 2010 via its 8,970 stores. Second and third place are occupied by grocery chain Kroger and warehouse outlet Costco. Industry trends are reportedly seeing many chains -- including even Target and Walmart - shrink or close shops, or in some cases turn to international markets to boost income.
Apple is opening a new Canadian location this weekend. The Mapleview Centre store is based in Burlington, Ontario, and will launch this Saturday at 9:30AM Eastern. Burlington is notably within the Greater Toronto Area, which is already home to several Apple Stores, including four in Toronto proper.

Sales per SKU
I wonder where Apple rates in sales versus the number of SKUs. Apple carries relatively few items, whereas grocery stores, big box stores, etc. carry hundreds of thousands of different products in their stores.
