CyanogenMod crew gets very early Android 2.3 on HP TouchPads

updated 09:00 am EDT, Mon August 29, 2011

CyanogenMod 7 running in basic form on TouchPad

The CyanogenMod crew's plans for an Android port to the HP TouchPad got closer late Sunday after it reported very preliminary success. Partly in an attempt to get more TouchPads for development, the firmware hacking team showed RootzWiki a demo (video below) of both the Android 2.3 lock screen from CyanogenMod 7 and its basic home screen running on the normally webOS-based design. Not even the touchscreen driver is working so far, although 2D graphics acceleration, a tablet-optimized interface and more were already working.

In the long term, the group hoped to set up a multi-boot option where users could still go into webOS even while they had the option of using CM7.

As with most CyanogenMod projects, the team didn't want to commit to an estimated time for completing the OS. Some of this would depend on getting the four additional tablets needed to give developers a real testing environment. The crew has been determined to get the project finished as it's unclear what fate webOS will have where Android is relatively secure.
