Sony S2 clamshell becomes Tablet P with new info

Sony's second tablet, the S2, was given some last-minute details Friday in a leak. The Android 3.1 clamshell is now known as the Tablet P, a direct tie back to the VAIO P it effectively replaces, and will support 4G along with Wi-FI. Whether that's LTE or pseudo-4G like AT&T's HSPA+ wasn't gleaned by Engadget tipsters.

It might be a cost-saving model with just 512MB of RAM, 4GB of permanent storage and a bundled 2GB microSD card. The design could also be very light. Despite having two 5.5-inch touchscreens, it may weigh just 0.82 pounds, or nearly half that of the roughly 1.32 pounds of both Sony's larger Tablet S and Apple's iPad 2. The Tegra 2 processor of the Tablet S will carry over, though the front webcam on the Tablet P will be a very modest 0.3-megapixel (VGA) sensor, again likely owing to cost.

As before, the P will mainly be a gateway into all of Sony's services, ranging from PlayStation Suite for gaming through to Reader as well as Qriocity for music and video. The IR blaster on the S might not carry over given the P's design possibly blocking a line of sight.

Both of the slates are poised to ship sometime in September and may be ready as soon as the first half of the month. Rumors have circulated that Sony might command a premium over what Apple charges, although the Tablet PC's features put that into doubt.
