Samsung moves back special event due to hurricane Irene

updated 07:10 pm EDT, Fri August 26, 2011

Samsung sets event back by one day

The formal launch of the Galaxy S II in the US was set back Friday. Samsung pushed the event back from its original August 29 date to August 30 out of anticipation of problems stemming from the mandatory evacuations and possible damage relating to hurricane Irene. The timing puts it just two days ahead of Samsung's worldwide launch at IFA, in Berlin.

The event will see Samsung roll out variants on its dual-core flagship Android phone for AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobie. All of them change the navigation buttons, but could vary widely. The AT&T version should be closest to the original, while the Sprint model will add 4G through WiMAX and get some extra cosmetic changes. The T-Mobile version will be the most dramatic change; as theHercules, it will get a larger 4.5-inch screen and very fast 42Mbps HSPA+ data.

Other carriers might be included, but the conspicuous omission will be Verizon. The carrier might get a closely related phone but has turned down the Galaxy S II for unknown reasons. It may be waiting on a different phone with LTE.
