PlayBook screenshots show BES missing in OS 2.0

Apparent screenshots of a build of RIM's forthcoming BlackBerry Tablet OS 2.0 release have been leaked on a Chinese website, MaxPDA. If accurate, the images (embedded below) suggest that RIM has skipped out on support for its BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), which will seemingly remain confined to the way it is currently deployed through its BlackBerry Bridge solution. The screenshots also show an Android icon, indicating that RIM is making good on its promise to add a wrapper allowing Android apps to run on the PlayBook.

Launched without a native email client, calendar or contacts, the PlayBook drew heavy criticism from many quarters -- although the OS 2.0 update has been promised to address these obvious shortcomings. The OS 2.0 screenshots show the promised native email, calendar and contacts apps, however in lieu of BES, users are given the option create o configure Exchange/Active Sync, IMAP, POP, CalDAV and CardDAV accounts.

Another notable inclusion is a BBM app, for free instant messaging between PlayBooks and presumably BlackBerry handsets as well. It is a feature which has gained a loyal following, particularly among young people in the UK as well as those in enterprise.

The build of the BlackBerry Tablet OS 2.0 leaked in the screenshots is noted as version The OS is rumored to miss its planned summer release and may now arrive in the autumn as RIM is said to prefer rolling out all the new features in one major release. [via Crackberry]
