Samsung inadvertently confirms Nexus Prime in C&D notice

updated 10:25 pm EDT, Thu August 25, 2011

Samsung says Nexus Prime real in notice

Samsung may have given its own role behind the Nexus Prime away on Thursday after it sent a cease-and-desist notice. After a claim to leaked Nexus Prime firmware, Samsung's general counsel warned the unnamed person through e-mail that the firmware is the "exclusive property" of Samsung and otherwise said the firmware was real. The copy of the note obtained by Geek ordered the firmware holder to "return" the code under the threat of lawsuits or even criminal charges.

If the message is real, it virtually confirms Samsung's role as the manufacturer for what should be a Google-branded device. Cease-and-desist warnings can only stand if the product behind them is real, and the multiple references make it clear Samsung is referring to a new device.

The Nexus Prime is commonly thought to be a very high-end showcase for Ice Cream Sandwich (likely Android 4). If so, it will have a 4.5- or 4.65-inch, 720x1280 display made possible in a normal size by the phone no longer needing dedicated hardware navigation buttons. It's known to have a dual-core processor and might use a TI OMAP chip, although Samsung is likely eager to keep using its own Exynos chip from the Galaxy S II.

A launch of Google's third-generation Nexus, no matter the name, could come as soon as October and is officially due at least before the end of the year. One as yet uncorroborated rumor has it coming to Verizon and would be that carrier's first Nexus phone.
