Lenovo IdeaPad S100 with MeeGo goes on sale in Europe

updated 04:55 pm EDT, Mon August 22, 2011

Early implementation of Linux-based MeeGo OS

Lenovo's IdeaPad S100 has begun to show up on European shelves with MeeGo. This is the first netbook running the Linux-based, Intel- and Nokia-developed OS to be sold on the continent. It's not clear if Lenovo has plans to bring the variant on the netbook to the US.

The IdeaPad S100 runs a single-core, 1.33GHz Intel Atom N435 processor. The standard trim includes a 10.1-inch 1024x600 display, a 160GB, 5,400 RPM hard drive, and 1GB DDR3 RAM. The battery provides six to seven hours of use.

MeeGo started as a collaboration in 2010 between Intel and Nokia. The two companies joined together because of Intel's desire to get into mobile and Nokia's support of the open platforms Intel wants to use. However, when Nokia inked its deal with Microsoft for Windows Phone 7, Intel was left in the lurch, and has been scrambling to find new partners for the Meego OS.

The S100 is the second MeeGo-based device to show up for sale recently. In July, the Samsung N100 netbook went on sale in India. Several other vendors have announced MeeGo-based tablets or netbooks. In May, RedFlag demonstrated a tablet running MeeGo v1.2. ASUS has also officially revealed a netbook running MeeGo. The Eee PC X101 is also based on the Atom N435 chip from the S100.

The S100 comes in black, red or blue. Pricing in Europe is 180 euros ($260 USD). [via Notebook Italia]
