Android-based "Yahoo Phone" heading to Japan

updated 09:15 pm EDT, Thu August 18, 2011

Handset to be offered through SoftBank

An Android-based "Yahoo Phone" is reportedly heading to the Japanese market, where the company is said to be the dominante search provider, according to a TechCrunch report. The Android 2.3 device will be manufactured by Sharp, essentially serving as a Yahoo-branded adaptation of the Aquos 009SH that was recently introduced. Yahoo Japan's largest shareholder, SoftBank, is expected to be the exclusive carrier.

Yahoo-centric features will include a slew of apps, including Yahoo Japan Home, Yahoo Japan Auctions, a calendar, dictionary, and Yahoo Loco, among others. Hardware features are said to include a four-inch LCD with qHD resolution, a eight-megapixel camera, digital TV tuner, and infrared transmitter.

The Yahoo Phone is expected to arrive late next month.
