New York City to test parking meter smartphone app

updated 09:05 am EDT, Wed August 17, 2011

NYC phones to remotely feed parking meters

New York City has plans to test a "pay-by-phone" parking meter smartphone application. The app will alert users when their meter is close to expiring and give them the opportunity to remotely top-up the meter. Initially, the trial will be rolled out to 300 parking spaces for a one-year pilot program. NYC transport officials argue that they system, already used in Atlanta and Washington, will offer convenience for users and cost savings for the city.

Users need to register online for the program and then either use an app or SMS to enter the number of the meter matched to their space. Credit card details stored during the online registration process are automatically debited for the time blocks purchased.

"More and more is being paid by credit card, but the majority of parking fees is still cash," said Bruce Shaller, deputy transport commissioner. "However, the main goal here is convenience for drivers."

The location where the trial will take place has not yet been chosen as the program has only just gone to tender, however, it will likely be in the outer suburbs on a busy strip where business activity flourishes with retail and restaurants. [via New York Post]
