Microsoft Office 365 faces outage

updated 07:40 pm EDT, Wed August 17, 2011

Cloud-based service leaves users stranded

In June, Microsoft launched its cloud-based Office 365 service in 40 markets worldwide. For $6 per month, Microsoft touted that with the service, apps and documents could always be up to date. Today, that cloud experienced an outage until shortly after 7PM Eastern, handing Microsoft a major embarrassment for its fledgling cloud service.

Microsoft began tweeting about the problem around 4PM Eastern. "We apologize for the inconvenience that the #office365 outage has caused today," the company advised, without giving an estimated fix at the time.

The business-oriented virtual service allows users to collaborate and share ideas in real-time. It gives users access to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, Outlook and other Office apps, and connects them to Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint and Lync.

Its outage comes in the face of considerably better uptime for Google Apps, Office 365's main rival. Google doesn't have the sheer feature parity but has usually been more successful in getting cloud service adoption. [via Neowin]

    I dont get it...

I don't get the value of those cloud services made to replace local infrastructure in office space. I know no Office who can tolerate down time and lag and those Web apps are unresponsive and unpredictable when you compare them to their desktop counterpart.
