Apple Store down in possible surprise update [U]

updated 08:00 am EDT, Wed August 17, 2011

Apple Store down on Wednesday

(Update: site failure) Apple has raised speculation Wednesday by taking down the online Apple Store. The company usually does so right before a product launch but is doing so on a Wednesday, not its usual Tuesday. No immediate leaks have also popped up to give a clue as to what it might be.

Virtually all of Apple's current Mac lineup has been refreshed recently enough to have been ruled out, and iPods aren't expected so soon. Only the Mac Pro remains, but Intel isn't expected to ship the Xeon E5 that Apple would likely want until the fall.

Apple may use the downtime to release a new accessory or other minor product, or could be updating the store itself.

Update: The issue now isn't as likely to be a product release as the company fixing a technical failure. The site now regularly doesn't load at all, and Apple hasn't put out a press release.

My new MBP is on the truck for delivery today, which usually means updates are imminent.

    iPhone Apple Store working

I checked the Apple Store using my iPhone app and it's live. I didn't see anything that said new on it (featured tab shows MBA first). It looks like the main web site is down since the iPhone app goes to a different location (not sure where it goes or what it accesses).

    So what did they say?

Being journalists, I would imagine that you phoned Apple for comment. What did they say?

    Different engines

drive the Web site and the app store, I'm sure. As of 12:14 eastern time, the site is still down. Since there's not a "Back in a minute" Post-it on the Store site page, my take is : malfunction somewhere (tho I'm hoping for the new iPhone 5 to roll out this evening ;-) [non-news, sky-is-falling]
