Windows Phone 7.5 to freeze updates for WP7.0 apps

updated 09:45 pm EDT, Mon August 15, 2011

Microsoft said to be working on resolution

Microsoft has admitted that the upcoming Windows Phone 7.5 update may cause a hiccup for many developers. As developers are beginning to submit applications for the major release, the company cautions that apps released for Windows Phone 7.0 devices will not be able to receive any further updates once a developer posts a v7.5 build.

"We realize that some of you may worry about this limitation, and so we're actively working on ways to mitigate it," Microsoft's Todd Brix wrote in a blog post. "To improve the experience for users, it's our preference not to have "duplicate versions" of your apps in the marketplace."

Although the issue may go unnoticed by the first wave of users to take advantage of the Mango update, developers may be left with few options if bugs arise in apps running on handsets that are not immediately upgraded. It remains unclear if Microsoft will resolve the versioning glitch or wait for potential issues to fade as the majority of handsets make the jump to Mango.

"We are also going to work hard to encourage our pre-existing users to enjoy the free upgrade to Mango as quickly as possible," Brix added.

The Mango update and a slew of new devices are expected to arrive in September.
