Apple may unveil new iPods September 7, iPhone 5 an unknown

updated 07:50 am EDT, Fri August 12, 2011

Tip narrows down Apple media event

A brief rumor early Friday may have narrowed down the timing for Apple's traditional late summer event. The company has reportedly booked off September 8 in Japanese time, or September 7 in the US. Kodawarisan's source put iPods at the event but implied the iPhone 5 might wait until late September or early October.

Any event is still likely to take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (pictured).

Apple has settled into a habit of having an event in September that has usually been focused on the iPod and iTunes. With the iPhone 5 delayed this year, though, questions have been raised as to whether Apple will use the event for an iPhone as well. It would be unusual to introduce an iPod touch with iOS 5 while leaving the iPhone untouched.

The company rarely has special events less than a month apart and wouldn't have much incentive to show a new iPhone model just two or three weeks after iPods, even if they would ship substantially later. After indications that it might go as far back as October, signs have started to mount that the new iPhone would ship in September and thus that Apple would have little reason to split its announcements.

Because the rumors I heard was the iPhone would be announced on Sept. 5th, and new iPods were an unknown. No, wait, it was new iPads on the 5th. Yeah, that was it.

And none of it matters. The only announcement that anyone cares about is the long-awaited unveiling of the Powerbook G5. Everything else is yesterday's news.

for iPod to take the spot. Must be a new iPod that you can wear it as an earring. Or an iPod that looks just like Nintendo 3DS.... :-o

    Not delayed

Delayed implies that an item was supposed to be out previously. Rumors and speculation placed the iPhone 5 as being released in the summer. Apple never said any such thing. Ergo, no delay. Apple merely decided to change the release calendar, per their rights.
