iOS 5 code shows floating beta update target

updated 01:25 pm EDT, Thu August 11, 2011

Next beta currently pegged for August 18th

A small piece of code in iOS 5 beta 5 appears to point to a floating target for the next beta release, reports say. A file within the firmware includes a "NextUpdate" string with a date value underneath it. While the file was initially assumed to be static and pointed to an August 17th beta update, Apple now seems to be able to change it remotely, and has done so to push the next beta to August 18th.

Relatively little time is left for iOS 5 to be completed. Apple has stated that the firmware will be publicly available in the fall; the company typically holds a fall press event in early September, at which point it will probably announce a launch date for iOS 5, or else simply release it immediately. The company will also likely be announcing new iPhones and iPods in September, on which Apple will want iOS 5 pre-installed if possible.
