Android Ice Cream Sandwich shots show iPhone-like app tray

Ice Cream Sandwich photos see Honeycomb, iOS roots

A pair of leaks have provided the first glimpse at Ice Cream Sandwich. The OS has its expected influences from Android 3 tablets but also appears to take some direct cues from iOS. The always-on app shortcuts on the home screen now have an iPhone-like grid, RootzWiki saw, and now also appears to have iOS 4-style app folders.

Only a few unique-to-ICS features have emerged so far. The camera app can now shoot auto-stitched panoramas, and an NFC-aware version of Google Shopper will ship alongside to use the short-range wireless if a device has the hardware support. Gmail has been given a new theme that matches up with the blue colors of the "holographic" theme. Google has already said that ICS would support head tracking for cameras that can switch focus or even pivot.

Android Police added that the notification bar has been changed to be more visual and descriptive.

Despite borrowing from the tablet interface, the new OS is expected to place few if any extra demands on phones. As such, many devices from the past year shouldn't have trouble getting an update.

The build is "very recent" and shows that Google may still have some time to go before it has a complete release. Official plans have ICS shipping sometime during the fall. Nexus S owners would get it through an update, but it would first ship on the Nexus Prime, Google's Android showcase phone for 2011.

If it holds, the interface design might not help Google's attempts to fend off patent challenges. Samsung is already facing a legal challenge from Apple over the similarity of its TouchWiz app tray and other elements, and the similarity of Google's new interface to the iPhone could invite a similar response not just from Apple but from Samsung.

Android (robot): "synthetic organism designed to look and act like a human."

Android (OS): "synthetic Java operating system designed to look and act like iOS."

How is the app launcher iOS-like? B/c there's an array of icons at the bottom of the screen? That's already there. Take a look at LauncherPro, for example.

    I only makes sence.

Apple lifted Androids notifications as well as it's widgets for use on iOS.

Besides if anything Google is being kind to Apple, feeding it's team of lawyers that as of late seems to consume more of Apples budget than R&D,

There's no doubt in my mind now that you're one of Wrenchy's sock puppets. Stop stuffing the comment votes to bury the pro-Apple comments and inflate the S***** pro-Android drivel. Your OS can't win, as it will be sued into oblivion. Get lost, you stupid b******.

Wow - you sure know how to talk nasty.

And look, electronista has censored your macho language, now be a good iTard and explain to the rest of the world what you mean by "Your OS can't win".
Is it a matter of who's got the biggest bleep?

Listen, thnikkaman, be a real man, get off your basement, check out your yellow pages for local temples, Christian, Islam, Protestant, Buddhist, whatever.

Just find a REAL religion not based on shiny metal and plastic bits with a dying messiah greedy for your mumy's coins.

    Hey admin!

Could someone just delete all the juvenile-male chest thumping stuff above by wrenchy and the mis-spelled explorer Arne? It might encourage people to actually comment on the article.

    oh, wow

They 'stole' a row of icons! Then again, didn't that come from the Apple dock? Which came from the Windows task bar? Which came from something else? I'm surprised we didn't hear how android stole the iOS's interface because they show icons of various apps.

And what's with the "Your OS can't win, as it will be sued into oblivion. Get lost, you stupid b******." garbage? If iOS rules the smartphone world, we hear how it is the best. If Android takes the lead, we hear how it has nothing to do with market share, how many of each individual device is being sold, let's look at revenues and profits per phone, etc. I just wish people would pick a story. Either market share matters or it doesn't. You can't say it matters only when you're favorite OS or platform is in the lead.

Oh, and thnikkaman, a bunch of mac fanboys spend their time voting down any non-pro-apple speech, so why shouldn't the other occur?
