Rumor has iPhone 5 being joined by 'iCloud iPhone'

updated 12:20 pm EDT, Thu August 11, 2011

Cheaper device would lose most flash storage

The low-cost iPhone Apple may be launching this fall is internally known as the "iCloud iPhone," three anonymous sources claim. While Apple is still expected to launch a separate iPhone 5, the iCloud iPhone will allegedly offer a cheaper option at the expense of most of its flash storage. Owners would therefore be dependent on iCloud and other Internet services for access to things like music, documents and video.

Apple is said to be aiming at a $400 unsubsidized pricetag, some $200 less than an unsubsidized iPhone 4 currently costs. The device might then be completely free on a carrier contract, some Apple has never before attempted. Even an 8GB iPhone 3GS is $49 on a two-year AT&T contract.

The iCloud-based phone is further described as using many of the same parts as the iPhone 4, since the components are already available and have dropped in cost. One difference is that the iCloud hardware will supposedly use an aluminum back panel like the iPad 2's, since the iPhone 4's glass is a more expensive option. The creation of the low-cost model is thought to be why Apple delayed its normal summer iPhone release window; a launch is predicted for the last week of September.

    This is not

good. A contract free iPhone to me is a way to take an iPhone to a pre-paid plan and cut expensive carrier data plans. But an iPhone dependent on the cloud, if anything, needs more data. What is the point of a contract free iPhone if ultimately you have to pair it with a data plan?

    Stupid rumor

This doesn't make any sense. iCloud doesn't have streaming music so you need storage on the device.

This entire iCloud idea is not wise. If something forces the "cloud" down for even a short time, and you are dependent upon it, you are in trouble. Who is going to buy a phone that REQUIRES the use of online storage? Of course there is an oh-so-simple solution....PROVIDE A SLOT ON THE PHONE (like the SIM card slot) FOR REMOVABLE STORAGE!!!!!!!!!! This way Apple doesn't front the cost of the extra storage allowing the phone to be sold at a lower price. Of course Jobs will never agree to that idea.

    cost cutting from Flash storage?

Really? 16GB thumb drives are $20 or so.. and thats retail. So Apple is going to save a whole $3-5 on the cost of the phone? Yea.. def a bad rumor.

Microsoft did the cheap route with Kin and become a laughing stock. Kins were cheap and limited phones, but after the contract cost, getting a full fledge phone wasn't much more expensive. Besides, as others pointed out, its the cost of the contract that dwarfs everything else. And, RAM isn't all that expensive. If Apple wanted to really save money, it'd be in the screen, but you know Apple would never do that.

Doesn't "yet". iCloud doesn't even exist yet, except for some testers.
