Original rumors pointed to earthquake delay

Acer has finally committed to a launch date for its Iconia Smart handset, which is now promised to arrive sometime in September. Although the company has yet to disclose specific reasons for the delay, rumors suggest the Japan earthquake may have been a contributing factor. Most other products that were affected by the earthquake, however, did not face such a lengthy hiccup in production.

The Smart features a particularly tall display measuring 4.8 inches from corner to corner, with 1024x480 resolution. The device utilizes a 1GHz processor to power Android 2.3, while an eight-megapixel primary amera and two-megapixel front-facing sensor also come standard.

FCC documents suggest the Smart is heading to North America at some point, however specific carriers and launch dates remain unknown. Acer Germany's official Facebook page suggests the European variant will carry a 499 (~$700 USD) price tag.
