Android developers facing underpay glitch with no near fix

updated 09:55 pm EDT, Tue August 9, 2011

Android app devs being underpaid in Google bug

Android developers have been reporting a widespread issue for the past two weeks that has led to many of them being underpaid for their sales. Lists of paid orders in Android Market haven't matched those charged, in many cases leading to developers being paid much less than the number of downloads they received. Google Checkout marks orders as 'shipped' but doesn't translate that to every customer.

Google is aware of the problem and has promised a fix. To date, however, the company hasn't been able to give an estimated time for a fix. The mobile OS developer similarly hasn't explained what was causing the issue or mentioned how quickly it deliver compensation once the pay gap was resolved.

A number of other mobile app stores have had payment problems, including a weeks-long waits for Windows Phone developers. Few have resulted from technical problems, however. Apple also isn't known to have ever encountered such problems and has been credited by developers as one of the timelier producers.

More than just a bag of hurt

Android is a raging dumpster fire of hurt. For developers, handset and tablet makers (especially HTC Samsung) and Google.

Then there's the Oracle lawsuit and subsequent cash settlement and/or 100% pure Java rewrite and/or the injunction against sales and/or the royalties paid per copy of Android shipped. I suspect that Oracle will go for the injunction, which forces Google to rewrite Android, which keeps Android off the market for a year or so, followed by licensing fees paid to Oracle.

And that *still* doesn't fix the developer non-payment problem. Dumpster fire.
