Sony set to introduce low-cost OLED monitors

Sony is readying much less expensive OLED monitors, according to a report. The new monitors, which are aimed at commercial users, could priced as much as 70 percent below its existing product line. Currently, a 25-inch commercial OLED monitor costs as much as $29,300.

The new pricing structure for its commercial OLED monitors should help to bring them into line with traditional LCD monitors used in TV studios today. While OLED displays are normally preferred for their sharper image quality over traditional LCDs, the lower price will also bring a drop in the quality of the images the new monitors will display.

For everyday consumers, OLED displays have been confined to mobile devices such as smartphones. Typically, these displays have not exceeded 5-inches in size, due to the cost of producing the OLED panels and yield rates during production. News of a price drop for Sony's commercial line could mean that it has similar plans for cheaper OLED displays in its consumer line of TVs and monitors.
