Yahoo WebPlayer aims to simplify media embedding

updated 02:50 pm EDT, Thu August 4, 2011

Player supports multiple formats

Yahoo has introduced the first beta for its WebPlayer, a web-based media player that aims to simplify video embedding. The utility, which is written in HTML and JavaScript, enables users to enhance their websites with a variety of video and audio media formats, including MP3s, WMA files or content from Internet sources such as YouTube and Yahoo's movie trailers.

WebPlayer can be added to a site using a single line of code. The player then scans page contents and adds play buttons next to supported media or recognized terms, such as movie titles. Clicking the buttons expands the player interface, which provides playback controls and a playlist.

Yahoo plans to expand support for additional media formats, video/audio services and categories in upcoming releases. The company is also working on an API that will enable users to configure mashups, mixed-media playlists and other features.
