HBO Go apps hit 4m downloads, coming to TVs and consoles

updated 01:00 pm EDT, Wed August 3, 2011

HBO Go may hit Xbox and PS3 soon

Time Warner head Jeff Bewkes said during a results call Wednesday that HBO Go was expanding beyond mobile apps. He expected it to arrive on Internet-capable TVs as well as game consoles in the near future. No signs were given of exactly when or on what platforms.

The existing Android, iPad, and iPhone apps were still proving popular, the CEO said. Another million downloads had come through in the past month to bring HBO Go's total downloads to four million since it had launched in April.

Mobile apps had not only led to more flexible viewing but more viewing as a whole. Those who had one of the apps ended up watching extra beyond what they did before.

Time Warner requires a subscription to a supporting traditional TV provider to get to HBO Go but so far hasn't had much pressure to open it up to others. The content producer has a prime interest in preserving its lucrative cable and satellite deals, including with its split-off Time Warner Cable, and considers it a bonus that encourages users to stay on rather than a way to serve cord-cutters going online only.

No Time Warner support in West Los Angeles

You wrote, "Time Warner requires a subscription to a supporting traditional TV provider to get to HBO Go"--not in my neighborhood. I have Time Warner cable service and an HBO subscription through it, but the HBO Go app says that my provider is not supported.

    I don't get it.

If you already subscribe to HBO through your cable provider then you already should have access to most of their shows on your TV via on demand, right? It's nice to use on your iPad or laptop because you can watch stuff anywhere but it seems redundant to put it on my TV at this point.

It seems like a step in the right direction at least. This would be a big deal if it was like hulu or netflix where you could cut out the cable providers and deal directly with HBO. It seems like maybe that is their long term goal which would be awesome.

Time Warner and Time Warner Cable are 2 completely different entities now even though this post suggests otherwise. There is actually a bit of a war going on between the 2 which is why you cannot get HBO Go if you are a Time Warner Cable customer. Comcast is also butting heads with Time Warner.

If you want to see competition, get this stuff on the internet and allow people to subscribe to it. I would love to see an option to subscribe to COMCAST over cable or TimeWarner over internet or even better yet HBO over internet directly - dis-mediation!!!!

Now rather than futzing with net neutrality or Apple buying patents, here is the big deal for consumers and industry and I bet content providers.
