Seagate GoFlex Satellite Wi-Fi drive gets Android app

updated 04:30 pm EDT, Mon August 1, 2011

Seagate GoFlex Satellite now sees Android

Seagate has given Android users a chance at its GoFlex Satellite Wi-Fi hard drive with a new app (free, Android Market). Both smartphone and tablet owners can now get the same locla media sharing features from the drive that iOS users have had since May, whether playing music, photos, and videos or else opening general files. As before, users just need to be within Wi-Fi range of the drive, not the Internet.

The new version doesn't give Android users any special advantages, but Google's approach to file handling may let it support more file formats. Syncing should be the same, but copyrighted files might become an issue.

Using the app requires at least Android 2.2 as well as the drive itself. Just one 500GB drive is available and sells for $200.
