Schott intros Xensation glass for mobile devices

German company Schott just announced it will finally bring a competitor to Corning's Gorilla Glass with its Xensation product. It promises to be stronger and can be used for capacitive and resistive touch applications as well as optical and acoustic glass. Depending on said application, there are different Xensation-branded glass products made up of different materials.

The Xensation Cover 3D, for example, will be made up of lithium alumino-silicate glass and is meant for capacitive touch displays in high-end devices and smaller screens as it's easy to shape. The Xensation Cover is an alumino-silicate also for capacitive touch devices but is harder to shape. Xensation Touch is a clear borosilicate glass for resistive touch technologies and has a strong resistance to chemicals. Xensation Look is for optical touch with high transmission in IR and VIS touch devices. It's also made of clear borosilicate. Finally, Xensation Sound is a clear, high-transmission crown glass for acoustic touch technologies.

Schott will show off its product at the Emerging Display Technologies Conference in mid-August.

Strengthened glass has become an increasingly important part of technology as touchscreens become important. Both tablets and larger-screened smartphones are often dominated by their glass and quickly become unusable if the glass breaks. Notebook makers have also more lately been using technology like Gorilla Glass as their notebooks get thinner and the risk of a broken display goes up.
