iPad tops Android in tablet recommendations

iPad owners are the most likely to recommend their tablets than any other, IHS discovered in a fresh study. Out of 10, Apple users gave their tablets a typical 8.8 rating, making them very likely to suggest an iPad. Unusually, ultra-cheap tablet maker Zenithink was second by the slimmest margin, while Samsung, Archos, and Motorola were near equal.

The bottom of the list included routinely cheap electronics maker Coby (7) but also, in a hit to its reputation, Toshiba (6.7). The firm had spent six months claiming superiority over the iPad with the pre-release Thrive but launched to a major wake-from-sleep bug and complaints of an overly thick and heavy design. A fix should come next week but wasn't coming soon enough to avoid early negative reviews.

The lower-to-mid tier was dominated by traditional Windows PC makers Acer and Dell as well as the HP TouchPad.

Conditions of the market had created a "major barrier to entry," IHS said, and was borne out by existing owners: iPads represented 79.2 percent of all current tablet ownership, and 61 percent were already sure they would stay with their existing tablet brand. More than half of those who already had a tablet planned to get another one within the next year.

Of everyone planning to buy, over 50 percent planned to get an iPad. Dell was well behind, with just 11 percent expecting to buy a Streak.

    numbers are so close

The numbers of each device are so close it's really hard to make this statement. At least for the top five.
