Nielsen: iPhone, Android grew in June at others' expense

updated 09:00 am EDT, Thu July 28, 2011

Nielsen June 2011 shows iPhone, Android up

Both Android and the iPhone gained market share equally in June at the expense of virtually every other platform, Nielsen said Thursday. Apple and Google were each up one percent over May at 28 percent and 39 percent each. Apple kept its spot as the top individual phone maker by a wide margin as the largest Android seller in the US, HTC, was half as large at 14 percent.

All of the share gains were at the cost of other platforms, Nielsen said. RIM's BlackBerry dropped again to an even 20 percent. Microsoft's combined Windows Mobile and Windows Phone platform had also dropped a point to nine percent compbined, while all of the HP/Palm platform was down to two percent. Symbian, represented almost exclusively by Nokia, was steady at two percent.

The results showed a relative stalemate in the US, where Apple's continued strong Verizon sales have helped dampen any further inroads from Android. The iPhone 5 might tip the balance as evidence has mounted of a Sprint iPhone coming soon which, along with a possible T-Mobile model, could take away sales of HTC- and Samsung-made Android phones in the fall.
