Google tests new tablet-friendly search page

updated 10:55 am EDT, Wed July 27, 2011

Streamlines, minimizes content

Google has begun testing a new, tablet-oriented version of its search page, reports say. To cope with the limitations of tablets, content has been funneled into a single column. Sidebar options have been moved under the search field, and the "Goooooooooogle" text at the bottom of the site now just shows page numbers from one to 10.

Access to the redesigned page is not yet universal. Instead Google is only presenting it to a small percentage of users, apparently chosen at random. Should Google decide to roll out the interface to a broader audience, it may yet be a few weeks or longer before it becomes standard.

Such a pattern would be consistent with Google's normal deployment strategy. Beyond iPads it's not known exactly which hardware the company is currently supporting, although it is almost certainly conducting some testing on Android 3.x tablets as well.
