Rumor: iPhone 5 due 2nd week September, iPad 3 Thanksgiving

iPhone 5 gets alleged September ship date

An uncertain rumor Wednesday has Apple narrowing the release of the iPhone 5 down to the second week of September. The company is supposedly producing four million units for an initial batch, presumably for the launch itself. China Times' tips had suppliers delivering a 400,000-unit 'test' run to make sure production was solid before going ahead.

More uncertain was a claim that the iPad 3 was indeed on track for the fall but had been moved back to Thanksgiving (November). A parts shortage had forced Apple's move, the newspaper said.

The September iPhone date corroborates repeated rumors and might make sense for Apple. Companies often have to narrow down shipping to specific weeks. Talk has also existed of a late August event that would give Apple about two weeks' lead time.

An iPad 3 in the fall has already been disputed, but a delay to November makes it less likely again. Apple's brief track record has it releasing an iPad once a year and only in the early spring. In recent years, the American firm has shied away from releasing any products later than October. CEO Steve Jobs also made a big point of calling 2011 the "year of the iPad 2" at the current tablet's introduction, casting doubt on there being any surprise third model the same year. Going in for the kill

This will keep Apple way ahead of the game.

I think it's unlikely we'll see an iPad 3 this year, but keeping Apple's tablet competitors off-balance with the idea that it MIGHT be able to come out with a new model this year has a lot of value in and of itself. I'm just sayin'.

    Bad timing

There's a reason why Apple tends to avoid releasing new products after October. Better to have all your ducks in line and ready to be mass-produced in time for the big holiday season.

And Apple rarely if ever announces two major products updates within two months of each other. Especially iPad and iPhone. Each new iPad and iPhone is given months in the spotlight. On Apple's home page, in TV ads, etc. An iPhone 5 release in mid-September followed by a late November iPad 3 release would be barely 2 months. It just feels awkward and rushed.

    I call BS

Apple is just about catching up to the iPad 2's demand. Only know they can deliver as fast as people want them. Hardly unlikely they will bring in a new model now.
