Nikon pegs special event for August 24

Nikon is planning its customary late summer introduction for August 24, multiple sources said. Press events are due in multiple countries on August 24. Nikon Rumors lacked a full schedule but expected that the D3s and D700 sequels would show that day with Coolpix cameras a week earlier.

Little is known about their replacements other than a likely and long-requested upgrade beyond 12-megapixel sensors. Both full-frame cameras could get better support for video, including the first video of any kind in the D700's class, as well as better low-light sensitivity and autofocusing.

The Coolpix range should include a new, still mostly unknown rugged camera as well as sequels to two existing cameras. The S1200pj should be a direct sequel to the S1100pj projector camera, while the P7100 will replace the P7000. This last model should bring in a tilting LCD screen, new high dynamic range and panorama support, and extra controls.

Nikon usually doesn't ship new models immediately with an introduction and may wait until September or later to bring most of the cameras on to shelves if it faces no delays.

Great, so Canon would whip its own A55

Canon needs to follow, or get ahead of Nikon. This is a good thing.

    D700 replacement...

This thing is like the ghost that never manifests. Good thing though, my wallet doesn't need this b**** right now.
