SanDisk Ultra SSD en-route to retailers

updated 06:40 am EDT, Tue July 26, 2011

New SanDisk Ultra SSDs inbound

SanDisk has started shipping its latest SSDs to retailers. The SanDisk Ultra SATA II range is being pitched at enthusiasts interested in upgrading their own desktops or notebooks or extending the life of an older piece of equipment. SanDisk argue that replacing a traditional spinning hard drive with an SSD is more cost-effective than buying a new computer.

The new drives come in three capacities, a 60GB ($130), 120GB ($220) and 240GB ($450). SanDisk claim that the drives can read at 280MB/sec and can write at 270MB/sec. The drives can also achieve up to 3Gb/s random speeds, which should help to dramatically boost OS and application boot times over a spinning hard drive.

The drives can be ordered online now from retailers including New Egg.

    New life to old

SSDs can be marvelous. I'm delighted with the new life an OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD has given to my four-year-old MacBook. It's become snappy and fun again. It' provided I needed most, a just-over-$100 excuse not to upgrade to a $1000+ MacBook Air. $900 is too much to pay just to lighten my backpack by two pounds.

Even better, that same OWC SSD drive has already tested as working fine in the new two-drive Sandy Bridge Mac minis. When I sell that MacBook in a year or so, that SSD may find a cozy little home in an Ivy Bridge Mac mini.
