Apple, Groupon named as settling in Walker Digital lawsuits

updated 02:40 pm EDT, Mon July 25, 2011

Walker admits to three recent wrap-ups

Apple and Groupon are among the companies that have agreed to pay $25 million in total to settle patent lawsuits filed by Walker Digital, says Bloomberg. The publication cites "people with knowledge of the matter," who have refused to be named because the terms of the deals are private. They nevertheless claim that the lawsuits -- which involved roughly a dozen patents -- were resolved through a mix of licensing arrangements and some patent sales.

A spokesman for Walker Digital, Steven Hofman, will only acknowledge that the outfit has settled with three different companies; it is unknown who the third party might be. Over a hundred companies have been sued by Walker in recent months, including the likes of Amazon, Sony, Microsoft, Google and Facebook. Spokespeople for Apple and Groupon have refused to confirm or deny any settlements.

The resolved lawsuits are said to have involved a number of patents related to e-commerce and marketing. It is unclear, though, if any of the settlements were related to US patent 6,263,505, System and Method for Supplying Supplemental Information for Video Programs. Apple, Digimarc, Disney, Nielsen, The Weather Channel and TV Aura Mobile were identified as defendants in the connected Walker Digital allegations.
