Mozilla planning "ChromeOS-like" mobile OS

updated 10:00 pm EDT, Mon July 25, 2011

OS relies on HTML5-based applications

Mozilla has confirmed plans to build a ChromeOS-inspired operating system geared for mobile devices. The project, which is currently referred to as Boot to Gecko (B2G), will be built upon Google's Android OS at its core, though Mozilla's VP of Technical Strategy, Mike Shaver, suggests the company will try to use "as little of Android as possible."

Developers intend for the project to become a "complete, standalone operating system for the open web." Rather than relying on Android apps, the platform will focus on HTML5 applications created to the same standards as native apps for iOS or Android.

Mozilla admits that B2G is still in the concept stage of development, requiring developers to create a variety of new APIs, security protocols, and apps to explore potential capabilities.

"We aren't trying to have these native-grade apps just run on Firefox, we're trying to have them run on the web," the company wrote on its blog. [via SiliconFilter]
