Checks: iPhone, Samsung phones most pushed at US carriers

updated 04:20 pm EDT, Mon July 25, 2011

iPhone and Samsung phones most recommended

Fresh checks by Baird & Co. analyst Will Power suggests that Apple and Samsung dominate carrier recommendations in the US. At AT&T and Verizon, the iPhone was consistently a popular choice from staff and the top pick at AT&T. Samsung's Droid Charge was the top pick at Verizon among a general trend towards 4G Android phones.

Samsung was the backup pick at AT&T as well, with many choosing the Infuse 4G when the iPhone wasn't mentioned. HTC's Inspire 4G was close at AT&T, but the Motorola Atrix was distant. The Inspire's direct corollary at Verizon, the Thunderbolt, was plagued by poor battery life claims.

Sprint and T-Mobile, where Google didn't have to compete with Apple, were both led by HTC. The Evo 3D topped Sprint and was matched by its close cousin at T-Mobile, the Sensation 4G. At Sprint, the year-old Evo 4G was still a popular choice as a cheap option.

Power didn't get sales data but gets support through recent quarterly results. Verizon activated 2.3 million CDMA iPhones in a hint that demand for iPhones was still twice as high as for its entire 4G Android mix. Android is more of a factor at AT&T, but at 3.6 million iPhone activations, the majority of its smartphones are still iOS hardware.

Demographics could change quickly at the end of the summer with a new iPhone. Talk has persisted of iPhones for Sprint and T-Mobile that could engineer similar upsets.
