Oracle can depose Google CEO in Android lawsuit

An updated court order in Oracle's lawsuit will have Google CEO Larry Page testify in the case. Oracle will have two hours to question the co-founder in hopes of getting clues as to the wilfulness of any patent infringement in Android as well as how valuable the mobile OS is to Google. Page likely had to help negotiate for using Java in Android and could be important to the case, Oracle claimed.

"Given the importance of Android to Google's business, it is highly likely that Mr. Page participated in decision-making regarding the licensing negotiations," the judge wrote in granting the testimony.

Oracle had also supposedly explored other, "less intrusive" routes before deciding it needed to interrogate Page. Former Senior Software Engineer Bob Lee as well as Tim Lindholm, a former Sun employee and a current Google engineer, were also asked to testify. Ex-employee Dipchand Nishar was the only one Oracle didn't successfully obtain as a source.

Page's appearance if the case reaches trial will be rare for Google and could have serious ramifications for Google's chances of success. Oracle has been asked ot expected to settle since it would immediately lose much of its clout in the mobile world.

    Beta deposition

Page will give a beta deposition that's "barely good enough." Then he'll push out an improved update.
