Windows Phone 7 Mango finished as Microsoft tries again

updated 01:25 pm EDT, Fri July 22, 2011

Microsoft wraps up WP7 Mango ahead of apps

Microsoft has quietly finished Windows Phone 7's major Mango update, according to details in an episode of the Windows Phone Dev Podcast. Build 7710 has been released to manufacturing, which will make it the version the first shipping phones use. The company has already said it will take app submissions on August 22, likely a sign the OS will be on shipping devices soon afterwards.

The company is suspected of stepping up the release schedule to avoid a repeat of last year, where original Windows Phone 7 devices only arrived in November. Fujitsu is rumored shipping the first Japanese WP7 phone as soon as August. Nokia's Sea Ray prototype was caught using a final build and is also expected before the end of 2011.

Mango signals a major and self-admitted catch-up for Microsoft in mobile OS features that it hopes will even the playing field versus Android and iPhones. It will add a webOS-style multitasking system, give third-party apps more direct access to the hardware, and bring in a much faster IE9-based web browser with HTML5. Much of the hardware will also be updated to support newer processors and possibly front-facing cameras.

In spite of some unique concepts, WP7 hasn't latched on and has seen Microsoft continue to bleed market share. Microsoft regularly danced around how many devices are actually shipping, and its CEO recently said the company's share had gone 'from very small to very small' in several months. Mango will also be a help through much wider international reach that includes southeast Asia and phone makers like Acer, Fujitsu, and ZTE.

    Frankly

I wish MS was more competitive since competition pushes innovation. But the few times I've observed the Win phone I am amazed at how ugly the UI is and how awkward people seem to be when using it.

The 3.0 release may be "good enough"

It's called "7" but it's really a 1.0 release. And as we've all seen, Microsoft doesn't get it right until at least 3.1.

Good luck Ballmer. Maybe Windows Phone 9.1 will finally be "good enough" to compare against iOS 4. Of course, iOS 4 will be 2 years old by then...

    Avoiding a Repeat (Repeat)

"The company is suspected of stepping up the release schedule to avoid a repeat of last year, where original Windows Phone 7 devices only arrived in November."

    - Instead, MS is shooting for a repeat of Vista-quality.

    Tries again?

Tries again? What kind of biased journalism is this? MS is providing an update to their OS. Why do people assume that MS is "trying" to best Apple? How is that any different than Apple "trying" to best MS with their OS?

Make a good product and people will buy it. Ignore the folks who spout off FUD. What more is there?

    Bad reporting

Update: And the news has jumped the gun again. Bill Cox, Sr. Director of Communications at Microsoft for the Windows Phone Division, just tweeted:

"For those following the rumor mill, @windowsphone Mango has not yet hit RTM. We’re excited about the progress... stay tuned."

    More pressing concerns

I think there is more pressing concerns to worry about than what mobile OS you use. Try something like the potential AT&T + T-Mobile merger (dear gods!!!). Or on a bigger scale, our leaders setting the U.S. for potential economic failure due to the government defaulting on its debts. :(

    Apple or MS ?

It's funny reading all this comments. Americans only think of Mac or PC. They dont realize both are made in China. They are becomming third world country now while the China are preparing Chinese on the moon. US astronauts now will piggy back on Russians. How funny. The world is made in China.

    the real question is

when will any existing phones be able to update to this release? Sure, you can stomp on your existing $500 phone and go out and buy a new one with the latest OS, but then you are just following in Android's footsteps.
