iPhone overtakes Symbian in UK, Android getting close

comScore: iPhone just holding on to lead in UK

Apple has orchestrated a symbolic changing of the guard in the UK as new comScore data gave it the lead in the country. A 46 percent spike in ownership over the past year made the iPhone the single largest smartphone platform in the country as of this past May, with about 5.5 million users. Symbian's user base dropped 10 percent over the same space of time and left it with about 4.5 million predominantly Nokia-based users.

Android had meteoric growth over the same period. Even with a 634 percent boost, though, it was still just under the iPhone's ownership.

Smaller platforms had mixed results. The BlackBerry showed evidence of its fast rise in a few key non-American areas after RIM's sales soared 59 percent to put it just under four million. Microsoft's combined platforms weren't enough and saw it bleed 32 percent share to get slightly over half a million.

Although Android is collectively the largest platform, a disproportionately large amount of its share has come from the US, where limited iPhone carrier reach and frequently the world's best Android device mix have given Google an edge. The iPhone has led Europe overall in very recent studies. Most European countries have two or more iPhone carriers to choose from and see some HTC or Motorola phones only rarely if at all.
