Apple's Hulu talks not considered serious

updated 11:20 am EDT, Fri July 22, 2011

Apple only mildly engaged in Hulu bids

A further update on a leaked Apple bid for Hulu has suggested that Apple's involvement isn't serious. The company was part of the same early round of pitches from Hulu's financial representation, Morgan Stanley. It's not known if Apple will return for a bid, but AllThingsD's sources didn't believe Apple was a top contender.

Microsoft was already known to have backed out. Who if anyone would move forward with second bids isn't as evident. Many consider a Yahoo bid a possibility but a possible desperate move. Tips suggest Amazon might have problems getting a deal, even if logical, as it doesn't want to pay a premium that others might for video.

Google is suspected to be making an offer of its own, but it may be hesitant with antitrust investigations already putting scrutiny on its Internet dominance. Hulu depends heavily on its Disney, NBCIniversal, and News Corp content deals and could give Google a large amount of control over TV.

Apple could be one of the least likely to bid due to a clash of strategy. The company and its CEO Steve Jobs have had a vocal opposition to most ad-supported content and would be hesitant to support Hulu's core, free streaming service. Although it has Netflix support on the Apple TV, it has been hesitant to offer any subscriptions of its own for TV and might not adapt Hulu Plus.
