T-Mobile releases G2x Android 2.3 update to employees

updated 08:05 pm EDT, Thu July 21, 2011

Public launch expected to follow internal pilot

T-Mobile has reportedly begun releasing an Android 2.3 update for the G2x, however the internal pilot program is currently said to be limited to the carrier's employees. A leaked screenshot posted on TmoNews suggests staff with the G2x will receive the Gingerbread update as an over-the-air download pushed to the handsets.

The memo notes that the update will bring improvements to overall performance and battery life, while also fixing bugs related to unexpected restarts and front-facing camera operation with Qik Record and Share. Users are also said to be able to easily disable the Car Home mode.

The document also explicitly states that there is "no information available at this time about a [public] G2x OTA upgrade." A time-frame for the public release remains unclear, though the existence of an internal pilot program suggests the update may be imminent. Recent rumors also point to the final release sometime in the coming weeks.
